Getting A Good Deal On An Extended Car Warranty

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

Extended warranties are something that are an additional cost, and many times people are just not sure as to whether they need one or not. The cost of extended warranties varies, depending on the coverage and the length of the time in which the warranty covers the auto. If you should happen to purchase an extended warranty, it is important that the dealer offers you the correct information. You must be well informed in order to avoid any future problems when a repair may come up that you will cover a claim for under your extended warranty.

Should you purchase or not? The first step when purchasing a vehicle is to decide whether you need the extended warranty plan or not. Many people purchase the extended warranty without knowing enough about what they are choosing and end up losing money. This is simply because they do not understand the coverage that it offers. Another mistake that people often make is that they think the extended warranty plan must be bought from the dealer where the car was purchased. This is not the case, but, car buyers are often led to believe this because the car dealer themselves convince them this is the truth.

Determine whether the extended warranty pays for the diagnosis. Unfortunately, many times the extended warranty that people purchase does not include diagnostic testing. Which in cases, like a problem with the speedometer, is necessary. Suppose you take your car to the provider for a simple speedometer problem and the diagnostic test ends up costing you hundreds of dollars. The repair itself may only cost a few dollars. But because of the high cost of the testing, the bill ends up costing hundreds of dollars. This is one area that when purchasing an extended warranty the buyer should be sure to make sure is included.

Check the deductible. Extended warranties are not like car insurance where when you make the purchase there is a tremendous savings on premiums when you pay a higher deductible. Extended warranty plans are just not the case. Suppose you have a plan that has a $75 deductible that costs you $1500. You would expect that because your deductible is $75 and the cost should be around half the amount of the plan, but that typically is not the way it works. You may find that a $75 deductible plan costs $1575.

Verify if it is a “Captured Warranty”. Basically, a captured warranty is a plan sponsored by the vehicle manufacturer by the company that has special pricing arrangement with some vehicle sellers. It can be a bit difficult with a captured plan because you cannot choose a service provider of your own. If you get poor service from the service provider, you have no option to transfer to another service provider. Captured plan is not really good for you, only the company can benefit from it.

Getting the Most from Your Used Car Warranty

Saturday, April 17th, 2010

Anyone who buys a new car will always make sure that it comes with a great warranty. Why? Because they just paid a lot of money for something and they don’t want to have to pay another arm and a leg should something to happen to it. Even a new car can break down, even though it happens much less than with used cars.

Having a warranty for a used car is just as smart as having one with a new car. In fact, it is even smarter because a used car is more likely to break down. With an older car you will sometimes pay a higher premium for that used auto warranty, but if you got one from a reputable company it will pay off in the long run.

When you are looking around at different car warranty companies there are a few things you want to make sure is included. One of these is a replacement vehicle if your car needs to be in a shop for a while. Any company that does not offer a replacement automobile is not worth a dime. This should be a given, but it doesn’t hurt to double check.

You will want to make sure that your warranty has nation wide coverage as well. Nothing is worse than breaking down out of state only to find out that your warranty is no good there. With solid nation wide coverage you never have to worry about where you travel.

A good company will also offer you road side assistance and even help you get in your car if you lock yourself out. There are other services you can pay for every month to do this, but if you can get one company to cover all of it, it saves on time, paper work, and money.

A good used car warranty will also pay the mechanic directly so the money never comes out of your pocket. Some of the sleazy companies out there will promise to pay you back but then make it such a hassle and a time consuming process. Direct payment is always preferred and offered by the better warranties.
